Road remains snow-blocked; access impossible until May
March at Chandratal extends the deep-winter shutdown. Daytime peaks at -5C, nights -22C, the lake ice still solid. The Border Roads Organisation begins its snow-clearance operation on the Manali-Atal Tunnel-Gramphu approach in mid-March, but the actual Gramphu-Batal-Kunzum-Chandratal stretch sees clearing only from late May at the earliest. The Kaza side via Losar-Kunzum is similarly months away. Tent camps are not operational. There is no road access. The full plateau remains in winter shutdown. Local Spiti operators based in Kaza (reachable year-round via the Shimla-Reckong Peo route) start their season-prep in March but have no Chandratal product to sell until mid-June. Wait.
