Chandratal in December
Himachal Pradesh, India
Snow blocks all access—the lake road becomes impassable by early November
December at Chandratal is full winter again. The lake is fully re-frozen by the first week of December. Daytime in the basin peaks at -5C, nights drop to -22C. Both road approaches sit under 4-6 feet of accumulated snow. No tent camps, no operators, no road access. The Spiti plateau as a whole is in deep-winter mode — Kaza itself is reachable via the Shimla-Reckong Peo year-round route but Chandratal is firmly out of bounds. Local Spiti winter tourism (the small Kaza-based experience targeting snow leopards in Kibber and the frozen-monastery loop at Tabo) does not extend to Chandratal at all. The next viable Chandratal window starts approximately June 15. Skip the month.
