Bir Billing in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go in March—paragliding season opens with reliable thermals, spring weather is mild at 8-20°C, and Billing's takeoff is fully accessible.
Peak crowds
March is one of Bir Billing's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Paragliding world cup site. Oct-Nov is peak flying season. Backpacker crowd year-round. Book landing slots ahead.
March warms Bir to 10-18°C and the paragliding operators start test flights. The landing site meadow turns green. Cherry blossoms appear in the Tibetan colony. The Bir-Billing road (14km) clears of any winter debris. This is the transition month — not yet peak season, but the town is stretching awake. Cafe life returns to the main street.
The March story
March is Bir finding its rhythm. The first tandem paragliding flights start mid-month — operators test conditions and take experienced pilots before opening to tourists. The Billing take-off site, accessible by taxi (Rs 800-1000 one-way, 45 minutes), is where the magic happens: standing at 2400m looking down at the Kangra valley with the Dhauladhar range behind you is the moment that sells itself. The Tibetan colony's cafes reopen outdoor seating. The Deer Park Institute starts spring program registration. Cherry blossoms in the colony give Bir a briefly Japanese aesthetic. For walkers, the trail through tea gardens to Baijnath Shiva temple (5km) is excellent — the 9th-century temple deserves more attention than it gets. March prices are pre-peak: Rs 800-1500 for rooms, Rs 2500-3500 for tandem flights (vs May's Rs 3500-4000). Book directly with local operators, not aggregator apps.
