Chandratal in August
Himachal Pradesh, India
Peak crowds
August is one of Chandratal's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Accessible only Jul–Sep; peak crowds during this brief open window; closed rest of year.
August at Chandratal is the second peak month and one of the cleanest windows of the year for the broader Spiti circuit. Daytime in the lake basin 14-17C, nights 3-5C, the lake at maximum reflectivity. Tent camps at full capacity. The Spiti plateau remains rain-shadowed — under 35mm of rainfall — but the Manali-Atal Tunnel-Gramphu approach absorbs the monsoon at full strength, and August sees the year's most frequent landslide breaks on the Manali side (typically 2-4 events, each clearing within 24-48 hours). The Kaza-Losar-Kunzum approach via the Shimla-Kinnaur winter route stays reliable. Smart August itineraries enter via Manali and exit via Shimla (or vice versa) to hedge against landslide closures. Acclimatisation at Kaza or Sarchu for 48 hours before sleeping at the lake remains essential. Camps run through late September only; the booking window is tightest in August at Independence Day weekend (book 3-4 weeks ahead).
Why August scores 8.0/10
