Dharamshala in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go — March combines peak season weather (8–20°C), rhododendron bloom, and snow-capped peak clarity, making trails and monasteries equally rewarding.
Peak crowds
March is one of Dharamshala's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Peak Mar–May for spring + cricket season; Oct for post-monsoon clarity. Monsoon Jun–Aug is quiet.
March wakes Dharamshala up. Temperatures climb to 8-20°C, the Kangra Valley greens rapidly, and rhododendrons start blooming in the forests above town. The HPCA stadium often hosts pre-IPL practice matches. The Kangra tea gardens begin their first flush — the most prized tea of the year. Tourists start returning — numbers jump to 20,000-30,000. Hotel prices begin their climb. The road from Pathankot is clear and scenic.
The March story
March is when Dharamshala transitions from sleepy hill town to alive hill town. The first flush Kangra tea harvest (mid-March to April) is a genuine event — the tea gardens between Dharamshala and Palampur turn bright green and the factory shops sell tea that won't reach Delhi stores for months. Kangra tea is a GI-tagged product and the green tea variety is considered among India's finest. The HPCA stadium may host matches — check the schedule, because watching cricket at 1,457m with snow peaks behind is a sporting experience that exists nowhere else on earth. The Dharamshala War Memorial is particularly moving during this period as military families visit. The road to Masroor Temple is perfect — dry, scenic, and the 8th-century rock carvings catch beautiful spring light. The rhododendron bloom starts in the upper forests (hike up from Dharamshala towards McLeod Ganj to catch them). Hotel rates are 15-20% below April peaks. Good hospital access, full 4G coverage.
