Peak crowds
September is one of Chandratal's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Accessible only Jul–Sep; peak crowds during this brief open window; closed rest of year.
September at Chandratal is the year's most coherent window. Monsoon retreats from the Manali approach in the first fortnight; landslide risk on the Manali-Gramphu stretch drops sharply. Daytime in the basin reaches 12-15C, nights 0-3C in the early month and dropping to -5C in the last week. The lake reflects at its cleanest of the year. Tent camps remain operational through to September 25-30 (the last camps wind down before the October cold sets in). Both approach roads at maximum reliability: Manali via Atal Tunnel-Gramphu-Batal-Kunzum, Kaza via Losar-Kunzum. The September air quality on the Spiti plateau is the cleanest of any month — combination of low humidity, post-monsoon clarity and zero summer haze. Camp bookings still need 2-3 weeks lead time. AMS protocols (48+ hours at Kaza or Sarchu before sleeping at 4,300m) remain essential. Last clean window before the October-May shutdown.
