Road closed November through May; access requires winter mountaineering skills and special permits
November at Chandratal is the early-winter shutdown. Daytime peaks at 2C, nights drop to -15C, snow begins accumulating on the rim and the lake surface starts re-freezing in the last week. Both approach roads — Manali-Atal Tunnel-Gramphu-Batal-Kunzum and Kaza-Losar-Kunzum — sit firmly closed by mid-November. The BRO completes its winter-stop checks on Kunzum by November 20. Tent operators have removed all infrastructure; no overnight stay anywhere in the lake basin. Kaza remains accessible year-round via the Shimla-Reckong Peo road but Chandratal itself is unreachable from there. The plateau enters the seven-month shutdown that runs through to mid-June. There is no version of the trip in November.
