Barot Valley in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go in March — spring greenery, clear river conditions, and pleasant daytime walking weather make this a genuinely quiet valley escape at 4/5 suitability.
March breaks the freeze. Barot's apple and apricot trees begin budding, the Uhl river picks up snowmelt volume, and the first tentative visitors arrive. The valley's signature walk — along the narrow-gauge rail track of the Shanan power project — is comfortable again.
The March story
March is when Barot starts making sense as a destination beyond the hardy-winter-traveller niche. The deodar forests are still brown-green but wildflowers appear along the rail track — violets, primulas, and the first rhododendron buds at higher elevations. The Uhl river gains volume and energy. The trout fishing season is approaching (usually opens in April, but check annually). The village's few guesthouses and camping grounds begin preparing for the season. March is ideal for the rail-track walk: cool enough for comfortable exercise, warm enough to stop and enjoy viewpoints. The Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary, which surrounds Barot, is home to Himalayan black bear, leopard, goral, and monal pheasant — March's thinner forest canopy improves spotting chances. Bring binoculars and patience.
