Peak crowds
July is one of Chandratal's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Accessible only Jul–Sep; peak crowds during this brief open window; closed rest of year.
July at Chandratal is peak season. Daytime in the basin reaches 14-17C, nights 3-5C, the lake at full melt and reflecting the surrounding 6,000m peaks at their cleanest. Tent camp grid is at full capacity (6-8 operators, total ~120 tent beds across the Batal-trailhead corridor). Both approach roads at maximum reliability: Manali-Atal Tunnel-Gramphu-Batal-Kunzum and Kaza-Losar-Kunzum. The Spiti plateau itself is rain-shadowed (Kunzum is the rain barrier) and receives under 30mm of rainfall in July despite the monsoon at full strength on the Manali side. Manali-Gramphu approach can develop landslide breaks on heavy monsoon days — typically clearing within 24 hours. Camp bookings should be locked 2-3 weeks ahead through operators. Acclimatisation at Kaza (3,800m) for 48 hours before sleeping at Chandratal remains non-negotiable. Carry cash — Batal has no ATM, no ATM exists between Manali/Kaza and Chandratal.
Why July scores 8.0/10
Weather
Peak summer. 3-17C. Both road approaches reliable. Camps at full capacity. Manali side cloud-buildup risk.
