Chandratal in June
Himachal Pradesh, India
June at Chandratal is when the Spiti plateau finally opens for visitors. Daytime in the lake basin reaches 12-15C, nights 0-3C, snow patches still visible on the rim peaks but the lake itself fully melted by June 20. Tent camps (the seasonal grid of 6-8 operators between Batal and the Chandratal trailhead — Parasol Camps, Spiti Adventure Camp and similar) deploy from June 10-15 and run through late September only. Both road approaches are reliable from June 15: Manali via Atal Tunnel-Gramphu-Batal-Kunzum (90km, 6-7 hours including Atal Tunnel), and Kaza via Losar-Kunzum (60km, 3-4 hours). The lake itself sits 1.5km from the Batal-side road; the motorable approach ends 1.5km before the lake (a 3km no-camping buffer applies, set by the Koksar Panchayat to protect water quality). AMS is the dominant risk — sleeping at Chandratal at 4,300m is recommended only after 48+ hours acclimatisation at Kaza (3,800m) or Sarchu (4,250m). Carry diamox; oxygen rental at HP Tourism Kaza office covers emergencies.
