Kasol in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go in March — trails to Tosh and Grahan open, cafe season starts, and 5–18°C suits hiking without extreme cold gear.
March is when Kasol comes back to life and the timing is excellent. Temperatures climb to 5-18°C. Cafes reopen in waves — by mid-March, Moon Dance, Evergreen, and most of the main strip are serving full menus. The apple and cherry blossoms start around the second week and the Parvati Valley turns pink-white against green pine. The backpacker crowd returns but hasn't hit peak density yet. The Bhuntar road is clear. Kheerganga trek reopens properly — the trail is muddy in patches but the hot springs are running and the campsite operators are back. March is shoulder season done right: everything's open, nothing's crowded.
The March story
The specific magic of March Kasol is watching a mountain village power back on. Each week brings another cafe, another guesthouse, another trail opening. The river is starting to swell with snowmelt — not the dangerous monsoon volume, but enough to sound powerful from your guesthouse window. Shakshuka at Jim Morrison Cafe without a 30-minute wait. The Chalal bridge walk with maybe five other people crossing. Room rates are mid-range: ₹800-1,500, fair for what you get. The Israeli traveller community is early-season — smaller groups, longer stays, less party energy. The visible drug scene that makes Kasol uncomfortable for some visitors exists but is muted compared to April-May. Malana is accessible again. For photography, the blossom-against-snow-peak combination is the best Kasol offers all year. Evenings drop to 5°C so bring a proper jacket. The one catch: weekends in late March start getting domestic tourist traffic from Chandigarh and Delhi. Visit midweek if you can.
