Chandratal in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
At 4300m with 3m of snow, the trek is impassable and the lake completely frozen solid
January at 4,300m on the Spiti plateau is one of the most hostile environments in the Indian Himalaya. Chandratal — the Moon Lake — sits frozen, snow piled 6-10 feet on the surrounding bowl, both approach roads (Manali via Rohtang/Atal Tunnel/Gramphu/Batal/Kunzum, and Kaza via Losar/Kunzum) impassable. Daytime temperatures in the lake basin peak at -10C; night drops to -25C. Atal Tunnel keeps Manali-Sissu-Koksar open year-round, but the onward Gramphu-Batal stretch closes from late October. Adventure-camp operators (the seasonal tent grids beyond Batal) shut down by the second week of October and don't return until late June. There is no version of the Chandratal trip that runs in January. The plateau is for the Border Roads Organisation crews and a handful of wintering yak herders only. The first viable visitor window is around June 15.
