Kanheri Caves in January
Maharashtra, India
Peak crowds
January is one of Kanheri Caves's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Rock-cut caves visited October–March in cool season. Monsoon and summer (June–September) see minimal visitors.
Kanheri sits inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali, 8km from Borivali railway station and reached via SGNP's main gate (entry Rs 85) followed by a 6km road or 1.5km uphill trail to the cave cluster. January is the cleanest month — daytime 22-30C, low humidity (60%), and the Mumbai pollution haze thins after early-January cool spells. The 109 caves were carved over 12 centuries (1st BCE through 11th CE) into the basalt headland, with Cave 3 — the Chaitya hall — anchoring most visits with its 8.5m carved Buddha figures flanking the entrance and monolithic stone benches that seated around 50 monks for assembly. Inscriptions in cave 11 record a 174 CE grant by Satavahana ruler Yajna Sri Satakarni. SGNP is closed Mondays; weekday mornings 8am-11am are calm enough to read the cave 11 inscription panels carefully.
