July is Mumbai's deepest monsoon month — SGNP receives 900-1100mm in July alone. The park stays open between rain alerts but the trail to Kanheri becomes a genuine wet-weather hike with mud sections, leeches in profusion (especially Jul 10-31), slip-prone basalt, and frequent 1-2 day closures during heavy spells. Cave interiors stay dry (basalt overhangs work) but reaching them is the problem. The waterfall around cave 3 chaitya is photographic, and the cave-90 cistern overflows dramatically, but the access risk-to-reward ratio is poor. Mumbai school holidays mean a brief mid-month traffic spike of casual visitors on dry days. Wait for September monsoon-tail or October post-monsoon for clean Kanheri access.
