However, by late August the waterfalls around cave 3 are at peak flow — the basalt headland's monsoon-fed cascades fall directly past the chaitya entrance, and the cave-90 cistern complex shows the engineering logic of ancient Buddhist water harvesting. For determined heritage visitors willing to accept wet-weather hiking and accept that 1-2 days/month see closures, August offers a uniquely atmospheric Kanheri — green forest cover full, cave faces wet and dark, almost no other visitors. Pack good waterproof boots, leech socks, and a torch. Borivali approach is fine; the issue is the in-park 1.5km uphill walk.
