Alibaug in January
Maharashtra, India
Go January — peak Alibaug, Kolaba Fort accessible, ferries running, weekday quiet.
Peak crowds
January is one of Alibaug's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Weekend traffic from Mumbai is brutal. Come mid-week for peaceful beaches. Monsoon — rough seas, ferries cancelled.
January is Alibaug at its operational best. The M2M Mandwa-Gateway ro-ro ferry runs every 30 minutes (₹290-490 one-way for foot-passengers, ₹2200-3500 for cars), the 90-minute crossing from Mumbai sits at 22-28°C with calm harbour, and the Konkan coast itself holds 18-30°C with humidity in the 50s. Kolaba Fort (the Maratha sea-fort just off Alibaug beach) is accessible at low tide on foot — check tide tables for the day's window, typically 2 walking hours either side of low. Kihim, Akshi, Versoli and Nagaon beaches stretch the 25km coast south to Murud direction.
The January story
M2M ro-ro ferry from Gateway of India to Mandwa runs every 30 minutes 6:30am-9:30pm in winter peak. Drive 18km from Mandwa to Alibaug town, or take the local bus (₹40, 45 minutes). Kolaba Fort access: check the Alibaug tide chart for the day — at low tide you walk ~600m across firm sand from the beach; at high tide, ₹50-100 round-trip boatman ride. ASI entry to fort ₹15. The fort's 17th-century walls, Ganesh shrine and freshwater wells reward 2-3 hours. Beaches: Akshi (quiet, family), Versoli (rocky, lower-key), Nagaon (water sports — banana boat, jet ski ₹500-1500). Heritage stays: Mandwa farmhouses, Kihim heritage homes ₹6000-25000/night. Book ferry car-slots 1 week ahead for weekends. Eat seafood thali at Sarjekot or Mahesh Lunch Home in Alibaug town.
