Peak Season
Kokernag in May
Jammu & Kashmir, India
May warms Kokernag to 12-26°C. The gardens are in full bloom. The spring pools attract local families for picnics. The trout hatchery offers fresh trout meals at the small restaurant on site. The Pir Panjal foothills are green. For those bored of Srinagar-Gulmarg-Pahalgam, Kokernag is the Kashmir that existed before tourism marketing — a Mughal garden, a crystal spring, and no crowds.
The May story
May Kokernag fills with local Kashmiri families — it's the picnic spot that Kashmiris themselves love, which is always a better recommendation than tourist-board marketing. The gardens are in full bloom. Children play around the spring pools. The trout restaurant does peak business. The surrounding Pir Panjal foothills are green and walkable. For visitors wanting to see Kashmir as Kashmiris experience it, May Kokernag is unfiltered. The springs circuit in May is fully accessible and beautiful. The Martand Sun Temple (25km, 8th century, one of the subcontinent's finest ancient temples, tragically ruined by medieval iconoclasm) deserves a half-day. For food, the south Kashmir wazwan tradition is more conservative and, some argue, more authentic than Srinagar's tourist-adapted version — seek it out in Anantnag. Budget: Rs 1000-2500. May weekends are busy (by Kokernag standards — maybe 200 people). Weekdays are calm. The Srinagar drive (80km) is through some of Kashmir's most productive agricultural land.
