Good Time
Kokernag in June
Jammu & Kashmir, India
June is pleasant (16-30°C) before the monsoon's light touch arrives late month. Kashmir's monsoon is gentle compared to the rest of India — Kokernag receives moderate rainfall. The gardens are lush. The spring flows at maximum volume. The trout are active. Pre-monsoon Kokernag is at its greenest and most welcoming. Amarnath Yatra pilgrims occasionally detour here for the gardens.
The June story
June is Kokernag at peak green before the soft monsoon arrives. The gardens are lush, the surrounding hills verdant, and the spring at maximum visual beauty — clear water flowing through a green landscape. The trout are active and visible. Pre-monsoon June (first three weeks) is arguably the best overall month for the springs circuit: warm weather, full bloom, long days, and minimal rain. The soft Kashmir monsoon that arrives late June is nothing like the mainland deluge — intermittent rain that enhances rather than destroys the garden experience. Amarnath Yatra traffic on the Anantnag highway can slow the drive from Srinagar — allow extra time. Budget: Rs 1000-2500. The JKTDC guesthouse is adequate. For better comfort, stay at Pahalgam (45km) which has proper hotels and use Kokernag as a day trip. The combination of Kokernag, Achabal, Verinag, and Martand Temple from a Pahalgam base makes an excellent 2-day south-Kashmir itinerary.
