Peak Season
Verinag in May
Jammu & Kashmir, India
May brings warmth — 14-26°C. The Mughal complex is lush. The chinar trees provide shade. The spring pool in May light is turquoise-clear. The drive from Srinagar through Anantnag is through rice-paddy preparation and orchard country. Verinag is Kashmir without the tourist circuit — no houseboats, no shikara, no carpet shops. Just a Mughal spring and the river it births.
The May story
May Verinag under chinar shade is cool even as the day warms. The pool in May light — turquoise water, green arches of reflected trees, occasional fish breaking the surface — is hypnotic. The Mughal garden in May is its most complete: the plantings Jahangir ordered 400 years ago have descendants in the same positions. The spring produces an estimated 1 million litres per day, year-round, century after century. The Jhelum flowing from this pool will pass through Srinagar's Dal Lake area, through the Valley, into Pakistan, and eventually join the Indus. Understanding that this modest pool feeds all of that is a geography lesson disguised as a garden visit. May Verinag with a picnic lunch at the garden is a perfect half-day from Srinagar. Hotels at the site or in Anantnag. The Kokernag springs (25km south, another major Kashmir spring) make a natural pair visit.
