Peak Season
Pahalgam in May
Jammu & Kashmir, India
May is when Pahalgam earns its reputation as Kashmir's adventure capital. Temperatures: 8-22°C. Every valley is green. The Lidder is in full flow. Betaab, Aru, and Chandanwari are all accessible. Tourist numbers surge. Horse rides, rafting, and meadow walks all operate. The town buzzes with energy.
The May story
May Pahalgam is the full experience. Betaab Valley is intensely green—the meadow, the forest, the river—all saturated with spring colour. Aru Valley's Gujjar herders are settling into summer pastures with their flocks. Chandanwari (16 km), the starting point for the Amarnath Yatra, is accessible for snow play—there's a natural snow bridge that lasts into May. The Lidder River rafting (Grade II-III rapids) is exciting in May's high water. The town market sells Kashmiri handicrafts: papier-mache, walnut wood carvings, and pashmina shawls. May weekends are busy—hotel prices peak and pony operators charge maximum rates. Weekday visits are significantly calmer. The drive from Srinagar, through saffron fields and rice paddies, is beautiful. May Pahalgam is why Kashmir became India's first tourist destination.
