Peak Season
Kokernag in October
Jammu & Kashmir, India
October is Kokernag's chinar season. The massive chinar trees surrounding the spring gardens turn gold, then copper, then red — one of Kashmir's great autumn spectacles, experienced here without Srinagar's crowds. The spring's crystal water reflects autumn foliage. Temperatures at 8-20°C are pleasant. The trout season peaks. October Kokernag is Kashmir's autumn at its most private.
The October story
October Kokernag is why Kashmir's autumn is legendary. The massive chinar trees — some centuries old, some 20 metres tall — turn gold, copper, and red in sequence. The spring pools reflect this canopy. The crystal water flowing through fallen autumn leaves is the visual that defines the place. The gardens' Mughal-inspired geometry (terraces, channels, pools) is most visible in October when the foliage thins. The trout at the on-site restaurant: fresh, firm, and served with Kashmiri bread — a simple meal that's perfect. The wider circuit: Achabal's chinars in October are equally stunning. Verinag's pool reflects autumn sky. The saffron harvest at Pampore (40km, late October) is a once-in-a-year event: purple crocus flowers carpeting entire fields at dawn, hand-picked by workers, and the precious stigma extracted. If you can time an October visit to catch both Kokernag's chinars and Pampore's saffron harvest, you'll experience a Kashmir that tourism boards haven't packaged yet. Budget: Rs 1000-2500.
