Peak Season
Kokernag in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
April transforms Kokernag. The gardens surrounding the spring burst into bloom — irises, tulips, roses against the constant backdrop of crystal-clear water. Temperatures at 8-20°C are comfortable. The trout in the spring pools are visible through the transparent water. The surrounding orchards are in full blossom. April Kokernag, far from Srinagar's tulip-garden crowds, is Kashmir's spring at its most intimate.
The April story
April Kokernag is Kashmir's spring secret while Srinagar's Tulip Garden gets 100,000 visitors. The Kokernag gardens bloom with irises, tulips (yes, here too), and early roses, all watered by the spring's overflow channels. The water's clarity in April — visible trout swimming over clean gravel, reeds waving in the current — is mesmerising. The trout farm restaurant serves fresh trout (Rs 200-400 a plate) that is as good as any fish meal in India. For the circuit: Achabal gardens in April are in full bloom — Jahangir's empress Nur Jahan called them the most beautiful in Kashmir. Verinag's spring pool under April sky, with the Pir Panjal visible behind, is transportive. The south Kashmir experience (Kokernag-Achabal-Verinag-Martand Sun Temple ruins at Anantnag) fills 2-3 days and represents Kashmir's deepest history with none of the Srinagar tourist overlay. Budget: Rs 1000-2500. Anantnag's restaurants serve Kashmiri wazwan — the multi-course feast — at a fraction of Srinagar prices.
