Peak Season
Srinagar in May
Jammu & Kashmir, India
May keeps the warmth (15-27°C) but the tulips are gone and the crowd pressure drops to maybe 120,000 visitors — still busy but breathing room appears. The Mughal Gardens stay gorgeous with roses taking over from tulips. Dal Lake is warm enough for longer shikara sessions. The road to Sonamarg and Pahalgam is fully open, making day trips easy. Gulmarg gondola runs for meadow views instead of skiing.
The May story
May is arguably the smartest month for Srinagar. You get 85% of April's beauty at 60% of the price and half the crowd. The chinar trees are fully leafed — their shade along Boulevard Road is iconic. Nishat Bagh's terraced fountains run full force. The floating market on Dal Lake (4:30-6 AM) is at its most photogenic with lotus flowers starting to show. Day trips expand — Pahalgam (2.5 hours, Betaab Valley is green and stunning), Sonamarg (3 hours, Thajiwas Glacier accessible). Houseboats are still premium but negotiable — expect 10-15% less than April. Wazwan plus fresh cherries (season starts late May) is a combination worth flying for. Shankaracharya Temple at sunset is sublime. SMHS and SKIMS hospitals running full capacity, connectivity is excellent everywhere.
