Peak Season
Srinagar in October
Jammu & Kashmir, India
October is peak autumn and Srinagar turns into the most beautiful city in India — no debate. Chinar trees blaze red, gold, and orange across every boulevard. Temperatures drop to 7-18°C (sweater weather). The saffron harvest is in full swing in Pampore. Tourist numbers hit 100,000-130,000 as the autumn rush peaks. This is the month Kashmiri photographers wait for all year. The Srinagar-Leh highway starts getting dicey by late October.
The October story
The chinars make October in Srinagar unlike anything else in India. These massive plane trees — some 400 years old — line Boulevard Road, fill Naseem Bagh, and canopy the old city lanes in fire-coloured leaves. Naseem Bagh alone has 700+ chinar trees and in October it looks like Vermont but with shikaras. The saffron harvest in Pampore peaks mid-October: fields of purple flowers, women in phirans picking stamens, the scent of fresh kesar in the sorting sheds. Apple season peaks simultaneously — Kashmiri apples straight from orchards cost Rs 60-80/kg. Wazwan tastes different with autumn produce — dried turnips (gogji) reappear in the cuisine. The Mughal Gardens are spectacular in fall colours. Houseboats are warm in the afternoon, chilly by night — bring layers. Book 30 days ahead as autumn tourism has exploded since 2020. Full hospital and connectivity access.
