Srinagar in January
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Skip — Dal Lake partly frozen, daytime highs 2–5°C with night lows below freezing. Houseboats run but most shikaras dock by 4pm; Sonmarg-Gulmarg roads are weather-dependent and Mughal Gardens are bare. Better window: April–October.
January in Srinagar is the real Kashmir winter — Dal Lake freezes at the edges, temperatures drop to -8°C at night, and the city sits under a thick white blanket. The famous Chillai Kalan (40-day cold spell) is in full force. Houseboats still operate but you will need a bukhari (coal heater) running all night. Roads to Gulmarg stay open for skiing, but side roads can ice over without warning. Flights get cancelled maybe 2-3 times a week due to fog. Crowds are thin — maybe 5,000 tourists total for the month.
The January story
This is the month for people who want Kashmir without the crowd tax. Srinagar looks like a European postcard — snow on Mughal Gardens, frozen edges of Nigeen Lake, smoke rising from houseboats at dawn. The Harwan-to-Dachigam road is beautiful if passable. Wazwan tastes better in winter — the slow-cooked rogan josh and goshtaba hit different when it is -4°C outside. Street food shifts to noon chai with kulcha, and the local bakeries run overtime on lavasa bread. Saffron from the October harvest is fresh in the markets and 30-40% cheaper than Delhi prices. Hotel rates crater to 40-50% of summer pricing. The SMHS hospital is 15 minutes from Dal Gate if anything goes sideways. Jio and Airtel work fine in the city, patchy in outskirts.
