Peak Season
Srinagar in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
April is peak Srinagar. The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden — Asia's largest with 1.5 million tulips across 30 hectares — opens in the first week, and the entire valley explodes with colour. Temperatures hit a perfect 10-20°C. The Mughal Gardens (Shalimar, Nishat, Chashme Shahi) are in full bloom. This is the single busiest month — expect 200,000+ visitors, with the Tulip Festival alone pulling 150,000 in two weeks. Hotel prices peak. Book 45-60 days ahead or pay double.
The April story
If you only visit Kashmir once, April makes the strongest case. Dal Lake is mirror-calm most mornings, the shikaras are flower-decorated for the festival, and every garden is bursting. The Tulip Garden charges Rs 75 entry and is genuinely worth it — rows of Dutch tulips against Zabarwan mountain backdrop. Shalimar Bagh looks like a Mughal painting come alive. The houseboat experience is at its best — warm enough to sit on the deck, cool enough to sleep without AC. Wazwan restaurants are fully operational and the seekh kababs at Ahdoos are legendary. The catch: everything is crowded. Dal Gate traffic backs up for an hour at peak times. Shikara rates jump to Rs 800-1,200/hour (vs Rs 300 in winter). But the beauty is undeniable. All connectivity works perfectly — 4G everywhere, both hospitals fully staffed for tourist season.
