Rishikesh in May
Uttarakhand, India
May Rishikesh is hot. Properly, punitively hot. Temperatures hit 30-42°C and the concrete ghats radiate stored heat until midnight. The Ganges is still raftable — operators run early morning trips (7-9 AM) and late afternoon trips (4-6 PM) to dodge the midday sun, but even then, the pre-rapid calm sections feel like floating in warm bathwater. Yoga classes shift to pre-dawn schedules. The cafes in Tapovan are open but rooftop seating becomes unusable from 11 AM to 5 PM. The town empties of international tourists — this is peak season for Indian pilgrims heading to Kedarnath and Badrinath, and Rishikesh becomes a transit stop rather than a destination.
The May story
The honest case for May Rishikesh is thin but real. The Ganges at dawn — 5:30 AM, mist rising off the water, the ghats empty, temple bells starting — is transcendent in any month, and May's heat makes those cool morning minutes feel earned. Rafting at 7 AM is genuinely fun: you get wet, the water is refreshing instead of cold, and the rapids don't care about the temperature. Bungee jumping operates with shorter queues. Room rates crater to annual lows: ₹500-900. AIIMS Rishikesh (important in heat — heat stroke is a real risk) is 15 minutes away. The Beatles Ashram in 40°C heat is an endurance test but you'll have it to yourself. Triveni Ghat aarti at 6 PM is still powerful — the fire ceremony and chanting don't diminish with the season. The pilgrimage traffic gives the town a different energy: less backpacker-yoga, more genuinely devotional, with families performing rituals at the ghats. But the brutal truth: 42°C with Rishikesh's humidity makes any outdoor activity between 10 AM and 4 PM dangerous, not just uncomfortable. Drink 4-5 litres of water daily. This is not optional advice.
