Rishikesh in January
Uttarakhand, India
January Rishikesh is cold by North Indian plains standards but functional. Temperatures range from 5-18°C — mornings are genuinely cold, afternoons are pleasant in the sun. The Ganges is at its winter low: clear, green, and calm, flowing over visible boulders. Rafting is operational on the full 16km Shivpuri-to-Rishikesh stretch with Grade III-IV rapids. Lakshman Jhula remains closed for structural repair; Ram Jhula is open and less crowded than peak months. The yoga ashram scene runs year-round but January is quieter — Parmarth Niketan's evening Ganga Aarti still draws 200+ people nightly. Fog can roll in from Haridwar side for 2-3 mornings per week.
The January story
January Rishikesh has a crispness that the hot months destroy. The Triveni Ghat morning aarti at 6 AM in 7°C air, with fog lifting off the river, is one of the most atmospheric experiences in North India. The cafes in Tapovan and Laxman Jhula area serve hot chai that actually matters — not a pleasant addition but a survival requirement. Rafting in January is for cold-water enthusiasts: the rapids are good (water is clear enough to see the riverbed in calm sections), but you will get wet and it will be 12°C water. Wetsuits are provided but not everyone finds this enjoyable. Neelkanth Mahadev Temple (12km uphill) is a comfortable trek this month — no heat, clear trail, monkeys less aggressive in cold weather. The Beatles Ashram is open and virtually empty on weekdays. AIIMS Rishikesh provides genuine medical security — a world-class hospital 15 minutes away. Room rates are low-season: ₹600-1,200 for ashram-area guesthouses. The honest gap: evenings shut down early, restaurants close by 9 PM, and the town has a buttoned-up feel that peak months lack.
