Munsiyari in May
Uttarakhand, India
Go in May — Milam Glacier routes are snow-clear, Panchachuli views are daily, and cool temperatures suit trekking, but altitude demands 2–3 days acclimatisation.
Peak crowds
May is one of Munsiyari's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Remote Kumaon frontier town. Panchachuli views stunning but road is long. Never truly crowded — distance is a natural filter.
May is Munsiyari's prime month. Temperatures: 10-24°C. All treks are open. The Milam Glacier trek (55 km one way, 8-9 days) launches from Darkot village. The Panchachuli Base Camp expedition starts. Wildflowers carpet the meadows. The town has its maximum visitor numbers—still modest by mainstream standards.
The May story
May Munsiyari is the Himalayan trekker's gateway. The Milam Glacier, India's second-largest glacier accessible on foot, is one of the great Indian treks—through Johar Valley, past abandoned Bhotia trading villages, to a glacier that was once a trade route to Tibet. The trek requires permits (arrange in Munsiyari). The Khalia Top overnight is perfect in May—camp in a wildflower meadow under stars. The Birthi Falls remains powerful. The Madkot hot springs are a post-trek reward. May also brings the Shauka community's summer preparations: opening their high-altitude summer homes, checking trails they've walked for generations. For non-trekkers, the drive to Darkot and back, through the Gori Ganga gorge, is adventure enough.
