Good Time
Auli in May
Uttarakhand, India
May transforms Auli into a green alpine paradise. The bugyal meadows are in full bloom, the treeline forests of oak and deodar are lush, and the Nanda Devi panorama has a new foreground: wildflowers instead of snow. Temperatures sit at 10-20°C. Perfect trekking weather.
The May story
May is peak bugyal season. The meadows around Auli — Gorson, Tali, and the approach to Kuari Pass — are carpeted with wildflowers at a density that looks artificial. The Himalayan panorama includes Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Hathi Parbat, and Ghori Parbat, all visible from the meadows on clear mornings. Temperatures are ideal for walking (10-20°C), the cable car runs, and Joshimath hums with trekker energy. The Kuari Pass trek from Auli is 3-4 days of the best moderate trekking in Uttarakhand — Lord Curzon declared it the finest walk in the Himalayas in 1905, and nobody has seriously argued since. May is also when Badrinath temple opens (usually early May), so Auli serves as an acclimatization stop for Char Dham pilgrims. Two purposes, one stunning location.
