Caution
Rishikesh in June
Uttarakhand, India
June is Rishikesh caught between two miseries: the tail end of the heat (32-40°C in early June) and the arrival of the monsoon (usually by June 15-20). The pre-monsoon humidity is oppressive — 80-90% with temperatures still above 35°C. When the monsoon breaks, the relief is palpable but brings its own problems. The Ganges starts rising. Rafting still operates in early June but operators watch the river daily; by late June, some stretches are suspended as water levels climb. The pilgrimage traffic to Char Dham peaks. The town is crowded with transit, not tourism.
The June story
Early June rafting — specifically the first 10 days — is a guilty-pleasure window. The river is higher than May, which means the rapids are bigger, more powerful, Grade IV sections actually feel Grade IV, and the warm water means you don't care about getting soaked. Experienced rafters specifically target this window. But it closes fast: once monsoon rainfall starts upstream, the Ganges can rise a metre overnight and the fun rapids become dangerous hydraulics. The first monsoon rains break the heat dramatically — 40°C drops to 28°C in a day, and the town exhales collectively. Triveni Ghat aarti in monsoon rain has a raw intensity: fire ceremonies in downpour, the river audibly rising, devotion that doesn't check the weather forecast. Yoga continues indoors at all the ashrams — Parmarth Niketan, Sivananda, Phool Chatti. Room rates stay low: ₹600-1,000. AIIMS is there. But the honest position: June Rishikesh requires either specific timing knowledge (early June rafting) or genuine indifference to discomfort. It's not a month to recommend to someone asking "when should I visit Rishikesh?"
