Peak Season
Rishikesh in March
Uttarakhand, India
March is Rishikesh's marquee month. The International Yoga Festival runs for a full week at Parmarth Niketan (usually first week of March), drawing 1,000+ practitioners from 60+ countries. Temperatures are ideal: 12-27°C. The rafting season is in full swing with perfect water levels — the Ganges is cold but not January-cold, rapids are Grade III-IV, and every operator is fully staffed. Holi celebrations along the ghats add colour and chaos mid-month. The cafes are packed. The town is alive in a way that winter months can't match. This is Rishikesh at maximum cultural output.
The March story
The International Yoga Festival is the anchor event. Morning sessions on the Ganges bank, 50 teachers offering everything from Ashtanga to Kundalini, 1,000 people doing sun salutations as the river flows past — whether you're a serious practitioner or curious beginner, this is yoga at its most concentrated. Outside the festival, March delivers across every category. Rafting: the 16km stretch is running perfectly, water temperature is tolerable without a wetsuit for most people, and the rapids have real force. Beatles Ashram is busy but the graffiti and atmosphere justify the crowd. Triveni Ghat aarti is standing-room-only — get there 30 minutes early for a seat. Neelkanth Temple trek is comfortable. Bungee jumping has queues but operates all day. The cafe scene peaks: every rooftop in Tapovan is open, live kirtan music drifts from ashrams, and the international traveller density means interesting conversations at every table. Room rates spike during the festival week (₹2,000-4,000) but drop to ₹1,000-1,800 for the rest of March. AIIMS provides medical backup. The one cost: privacy. March Rishikesh belongs to the crowd. If you wanted a solitary Ganges moment, that was February.
