Good Time
Gopeshwar in March
Uttarakhand, India
March is when Gopeshwar starts waking up. Daytime temperatures touch 18°C, though nights still drop to 5-6°C. The Chopta road begins clearing by mid-March in good years, and early-season trekkers start appearing. Rhododendrons haven't bloomed yet but the forest canopy is shifting colour. The weekly market picks up pace with fresh produce from lower villages. This is a sweet spot — warm enough to explore comfortably, empty enough to feel like a discovery. The Gopinath Temple's Nandi statue catches morning light beautifully around the equinox.
The March story
If Chopta road is clear, drive up for a day trip even if the full Tungnath trek isn't feasible yet. The meadows at 2600m with residual snow patches and emerging green make for striking photography. Back in town, the Gopinath Temple complex includes a museum with medieval sculptures worth 30 minutes of your time. The weekly Saturday haat (market) sells raw Himalayan honey, dried wild apricots, and coarse-ground spice mixes — buy direct from village women. Budget ₹1000-1800 per night for decent rooms; the GMVN guesthouse is the most reliable option. Restaurants are basic — dal-chawal-sabzi at ₹80-120. If you're heading onward to Badrinath, the road typically opens in late April, so March is too early for that circuit. However, it's perfect for exploring the lower Alaknanda valley, including the confluence at Karnaprayag an hour south.
