Champawat in March
Uttarakhand, India
March brings Champawat alive with rhododendrons. The forests between town and Lohaghat (14 km) ignite in red and pink, temperatures reach 16-22°C, and the tea gardens at Champawat's periphery begin their first flush. It is a small-scale spectacle that happens without an audience.
The March story
The Pancheshwar confluence — where the Kali and Saryu rivers meet at the Nepal border (about 60 km away) — makes a magnificent day trip. The rivers are different colours and refuse to mix for hundreds of metres downstream. Closer to town, the Mayawati Ashram (Advaita Ashrama, founded 1899) near Lohaghat offers spiritual quiet in a pine forest setting established by Swami Vivekananda's direct disciples. The rhododendron forest above Champawat is walkable without a guide and peaks in late March. Rooms: ₹600-1,500/night. March is when Champawat stops being obscure and starts being rewarding.
