# White Water Rafting in Rishikesh

Rishikesh is the rafting capital of India. The Ganga runs Grade 2-4 rapids through a forested valley between Shivpuri and Rishikesh, and every operator in town will tell you their stretch is the most exciting. Here is what is actually true.

The Three Stretches

Brahmapuri to Rishikesh (9km): Grade 1-2. Gentle. Good for families with children 10+. Takes 1.5 hours. Rs 600-800 per person. This is the "introductory" stretch — real rafting enthusiasts will find it underwhelming.

Shivpuri to Rishikesh (16km): Grade 2-3. The most popular. Rapids named Roller Coaster, Golf Course, Club House. Takes 3-4 hours. Rs 1,000-1,500. This is the one most people should book. Enough excitement without genuine danger.

Marine Drive to Shivpuri (26km): Grade 3-4. Serious rapids — The Wall, Three Blind Mice, Crossfire. Takes 5-6 hours. Rs 1,800-2,500. Only if you are comfortable swimming in moving water and have no heart conditions. Guides are mandatory and helmets are non-negotiable.

Best Months

September-November: Best. Post-monsoon water levels create the strongest rapids. Water is colder but rapids are Grade 3-4 at their peak.

February-May: Good. Water levels lower, rapids calmer (Grade 2-3). Warmer water. Better for first-timers and families.

June-August: Closed. Monsoon makes the river dangerous. Any operator offering monsoon rafting is operating illegally.

December-January: Open but cold. Water temperature drops to 8-12°C. Wetsuits provided but expect to be uncomfortable.

What Nobody Tells You

The cliff jumping that operators offer mid-trip is optional. You can say no. The guides will encourage you but it is not part of the rafting package. Height is approximately 20-25 feet into a deep pool.

You WILL get wet. Wear clothes you do not mind ruining. Leave your phone in a dry bag (operators provide these) or leave it on shore.

The camping packages that combine rafting + overnight camping on the riverbank are worth considering — the beach camps between Shivpuri and Rishikesh are genuinely peaceful at night.

Safety

All registered operators carry life jackets and helmets. Check that your guide has a certified rescue training badge. The Uttarakhand Tourism Board maintains a list of licensed operators — unlicensed operators exist and they cut corners on safety equipment.

In the event of a capsize (rare on Grade 2-3), float on your back with feet pointed downstream. Your guide will have briefed you on this. Listen to the briefing.
