The Family Road Trip Bible
Every kids-friendly destination in India, ranked by a parent who checked the hospitals
Travel blogs love to recommend "family-friendly" destinations. We decided to actually check. For every destination in our database, we scored kids-friendliness on five dimensions: terrain difficulty, medical access, altitude risk, road quality to get there, and activities available for children.
The results eliminated 46 of our 229 destinations immediately. Here's what survived.
The Top Tier: Score 5/5
**Gulmarg** — Easy terrain, ski school for kids, gondola ride, pony rides, meadow picnics. Hospital in Srinagar (50km). Both Jio and Airtel work. The only caveat: January-February cold requires proper clothing for children.
**Jaisalmer** — Camel rides, fort exploration (kids love the living fort), desert camping under stars, sand dune slides. Easy flat terrain. Hospital in town. Full network coverage. Avoid May-June heat.
**Udaipur** — Lake Pichola boat rides, City Palace, animal sanctuary at Sajjangarh. Flat city terrain. Excellent hospitals. Full infrastructure. The "family Rajasthan" destination.
The Solid Middle: Score 4/5
**Shimla** — Toy train alone justifies bringing kids. Mall Road walks, Kufri nature park, Christ Church. Good hospitals. Full network. Summer crowds (May-June) are the only negative — the experience is diminished, not dangerous.
**Manali** — Solang Valley adventure sports (suitable for 8+), nature walks, Old Manali atmosphere. Hospital in town. Altitude (2,050m) means gradual acclimatization for infants. Avoid monsoon (landslide risk).
**Jodhpur** — Mehrangarh zip-line (age 10+), Blue City exploration, Umaid Bhawan gardens. Flat terrain. Excellent hospitals. Blue City lanes can be confusing for small children.
Where We Draw the Line
These popular destinations scored 2/5 or below for kids:
**Spiti Valley (1/5)** — 3,800m altitude, 10-hour drives on broken roads, nearest hospital 6+ hours away, BSNL only. Not for children.
**Chadar Trek (1/5)** — Walking on a frozen river. The name says it all.
**Pangong Lake (2/5)** — Beautiful but 4,350m altitude, 6-hour drive from Leh on rough roads, zero medical facilities, no network. AMS risk real for children.
The Infrastructure Test
Our kids rating doesn't just check "is there a playground?" We check:
- Is there a hospital within 1 hour?
- Does mobile network work (for emergencies)?
- Is the road to get there safe in the travel month?
- Is the altitude below the pediatric AMS threshold?
- Are there activities that don't require adult fitness levels?
Places that fail 3+ of these criteria get scored below 3/5, regardless of how pretty they look on Instagram.
The Honest Conclusion
India has genuinely excellent family destinations — Rajasthan's forts, Kashmir's meadows, Uttarakhand's hill stations. But "family-friendly" requires infrastructure, not just scenery. Check the hospital distance before you check the hotel reviews.
