Tungnath in April
Uttarakhand, India
April starts the Tungnath season. Snow retreats from the trail but persists near the temple and above. Chopta greens up and the meadows begin their display. The trek (3.5km from Chopta, gaining 1,000m altitude) is viable with care — expect snow patches above 3,200m. The temple may remain closed (opening depends on snow clearance and priestly calendar). Rhododendrons bloom along the approach road.
The April story
April is the threshold. The Chopta meadows burst into life — wildflowers, birdsong, the entire Garhwal hillside celebrating spring. The trek to Tungnath passes through rhododendron forest that in April is one of India's great natural spectacles: red, pink, and white blooms forming tunnels over the trail. Above the treeline, snow patches require care. The temple may still be closed (check locally), but the trek to its location and the Chandrashila summit push are viable. The summit in April — snow on the ground, clear views to the Himalayan crest — is extraordinary. Chopta lodges reopen (₹800-1,500). The road from Ukhimath to Chopta can have early-season landslide debris. April Tungnath is the rhododendron trek — the temple is the excuse, the forest is the reason.
