Tungnath in March
Uttarakhand, India
March keeps Tungnath locked. Snow begins melting at Chopta (2,680m) but the temple at 3,680m and Chandrashila at 4,000m remain winter-sealed. The trail shows through snow patches at lower sections. Some adventurous trekkers attempt the route with snow gear — it's possible but demanding. No services at the temple.
The March story
March is for the snow-trek adventurer. The route from Chopta, if snow gear is carried (microspikes minimum, crampons better), can be attempted in late March. The reward: a snow-covered trail through rhododendron forest, the temple emerging from white, and the Chandrashila summit in late-winter clarity. This is not the standard Tungnath trek — it's a winter mountaineering-lite experience requiring fitness, gear, and mountain judgment. The temple is closed (deity at Makkumath), so the spiritual element is absent — this is purely about the mountain and the summit. GMVN and private lodges at Chopta may or may not be operating. Confirm before departing. Carry emergency supplies for self-sufficiency. March Tungnath is a niche experience for the equipped and experienced.
