Tungnath in February
Uttarakhand, India
February is maximum winter at Tungnath. Deepest snow, coldest temperatures. The temple remains closed. The Chopta base area may be snowbound. The trek route is under avalanche-prone snow. No services, no access. The temple's winter migration (deity to Makkumath) is a centuries-old tradition that acknowledges these mountains' authority.
The February story
Closed. February planning: the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek is marketed as India's easiest 4,000m summit — and it is, in season. The 3.5km trail from Chopta gains 1,000m through dense rhododendron forest (spectacular in April-May bloom) before emerging above treeline to the temple. The final 1.5km to Chandrashila is above the tree line on rocky trail. Total: 5km, 1,300m gain. Moderate fitness required. The descent takes 3-4 hours, making it a possible day trek from Chopta. Or stay at the basic dharamsala near the temple (₹200-300, no guarantee of availability). Chopta accommodation: GMVN rest house (₹800-1,500), private lodges (₹500-1,200). The drive from Rishikesh to Chopta (220km, 7-8 hours) is through classic Garhwal scenery.
