Peak Season
Munsiyari in April
Uttarakhand, India
April opens Munsiyari's trekking season. Temperatures: 6-18°C. Rhododendron forests below town explode in red. The Khalia Top trek is accessible—9 km to a meadow with 360-degree Himalayan views. The Panchachuli peaks lose lower snow, revealing rock faces. The town comes alive with visiting trekkers and returning seasonal workers.
The April story
April Munsiyari is the month that converts casual visitors into Munsiyari devotees. The Khalia Top trek, through blooming rhododendron and oak forest, opens to a grassland summit with Panchachuli, Nanda Devi East, Rajrambha, and Nanda Kot visible in a 360-degree panorama that is among India's finest. Camp at the top (or return the same day, 7-8 hours round trip). The town itself, nestled on a ridge facing the peaks, wakes to sunrise on Panchachuli every morning—the five peaks turning from grey to pink to gold. The Tribal Heritage Museum, run by the state government, is worth an hour. The Madkot hot springs (25 km) make a good day trip—natural thermal pools by the Gori Ganga. April rhododendron forest, with red canopy and snow peaks visible through gaps, is a photographer's masterwork.
