Peak Season
Gopeshwar in April
Uttarakhand, India
April is Gopeshwar's opening act. The Chopta-Tungnath trail is accessible again, and the 3.5 km climb to the world's highest Shiva temple at 3680m is in prime condition — cool air, clear skies, no monsoon mud. Rhododendrons explode across the hillsides in red and pink. Temperatures sit at a comfortable 12-24°C. The town buzzes with trekking groups stocking up on supplies. Sari village, the starting point for the Valley of Flowers trek, is a short drive away but that trail won't open until June. Book accommodation in Chopta early — it fills fast.
The April story
The Tungnath trek is the main event. Start from Chopta (2600m), climb through rhododendron forest to Tungnath temple (3680m) in 2-3 hours, then push another 1.5 km to Chandrashila summit (4000m) for views spanning Nanda Devi, Trisul, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath peaks. Carry 2 litres of water — there's one chaiwala midway who may or may not be open. Temple stays open roughly 6 AM to 6 PM. Back in Gopeshwar, the Sagar village viewpoint catches sunset light on the snow peaks. Room rates climb to ₹1500-2500 in Chopta; Gopeshwar stays cheaper at ₹1000-1800. The road to Badrinath via Joshimath opens late April — check GMVN updates before planning an extended circuit. Local tip: the Deoria Tal trek (3 km from Sari village, 2438m altitude lake) is equally stunning in April and far less crowded than Chopta.
