Tungnath in January
Uttarakhand, India
January: Tungnath is buried under snow at 3,680m. The highest Shiva temple in the world (one of the Panch Kedars) is closed for winter. The trek from Chopta (3.5km) is impassable. The temple deity has been moved to Makkumath village for winter worship. Temperatures at -15 to -5°C. The Chandrashila summit above (4,000m) is a white dome.
The January story
No access to the temple. Tungnath is the highest of the Panch Kedar temples — five Shiva temples in the Garhwal Himalayas, each believed to house a body part of Shiva. Tungnath houses the arms. The temple was (legendarily) built by the Pandavas and is at least 1,000 years old. The structure at 3,680m — small, stone, ancient — survives six months of burial each year. The Chandrashila summit (4,000m, 1.5km above the temple) is the real altitude attraction — the 360-degree panorama includes Nanda Devi (7,816m), Trishul (7,120m), Kedarnath peak, and Chaukhamba. Plan for May-June or September-October. The trek is short (3.5km from Chopta) but steep (1,000m altitude gain). Chopta has basic accommodation (₹500-1,500) and serves as base camp. The drive to Chopta from Rishikesh is 220km via Rudraprayag and Ukhimath.
