Peak Season
Chopta in April
Uttarakhand, India
April is Chopta at its absolute best. Rhododendron forests explode in crimson and pink from 2,500m to 3,400m — the entire trail to Tungnath becomes a tunnel of color. Tungnath temple opens for the season (exact date varies, usually first or second week). Temperatures are ideal: 15-20°C daytime at the meadow, 2-5°C at night. Snow lingers only above 3,500m, adding a white crown to Chandrashila summit. The road from Gopeshwar is fully open. Dhabas at Chopta meadow are operational, serving dal-chawal and maggi. BSNL works intermittently.
The April story
The Tungnath trek in April is the single best short trek in Uttarakhand — 3.5km one way, gaining 1,000m elevation through rhododendron forests that look like they were art-directed. Chandrashila summit (4,000m) adds another 1.5km and delivers a 360-degree panorama: Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar range, Chaukhamba, and Bandarpoonch all visible on a clear morning. Start by 5:30 AM for summit sunrise — the light on the snow peaks is extraordinary. The trail is well-defined but steep in sections; trekking poles help. Carry 2 liters of water — there is one stream crossing midway but it may not be flowing early in the month. April weekends get busy (50-80 trekkers), so weekday visits are significantly better. Book accommodation in Chopta village in advance — options are basic (tents and wooden huts, ₹800-1,500/night) but adequate. No ATM, no hospital, bring cash and a basic first-aid kit.
