Chopta in February
Uttarakhand, India
Snow melts by late February, shrinking your trekking window to early month
February is marginally less brutal than January but Chopta remains under heavy snow — typically 2-4 feet at the meadow and significantly more above Tungnath. The road from Gopeshwar opens intermittently on clear days but can shut again after a single overnight snowfall. Daytime temperatures reach 2-5°C, nights still plunge to -8°C. Tungnath temple stays closed. BSNL coverage is nonexistent or single-bar at best. A few local porters begin scouting trail conditions toward month-end but organized trekking has not resumed.
The February story
Late February occasionally gives experienced trekkers a narrow weather window. If you hit 3-4 consecutive clear days, the trek to Tungnath through knee-deep snow is stunningly beautiful — snow-laden oak and rhododendron forests, zero other trekkers, and panoramic views of Nanda Devi and Trishul that are sharper in winter air than any other season. But the operative word is "if." Weather in Chopta changes within hours, and a snowstorm at 3,680m with no shelter and no communication is a genuine emergency. You need the same winter mountaineering gear as January. The trail is still not marked. The one advantage over January: days are slightly longer, giving you more daylight hours for the approach. If you are testing yourself for bigger Himalayan winter expeditions, February Chopta is a legitimate proving ground. Otherwise, wait until April.
