Chopta in January
Uttarakhand, India
Chopta is buried under 3-5 feet of snow in January and the road from Gopeshwar is officially closed. Tungnath temple is sealed shut, Chandrashila summit is a whiteout, and the handful of dhabas that operate in season are all shuttered. Temperatures drop to -10°C at night and hover around 0°C during the day. This is not a trekking month — it is a survival scenario for anyone without mountaineering experience, proper gear, and a genuine reason to be here. BSNL signal dies completely. The nearest medical help is Gopeshwar, 40km away on an icy road that may not be drivable.
The January story
If you still want to attempt Chopta in January, you need full alpine winter gear: gaiters, crampons, a -20°C sleeping bag, and a tent rated for heavy snowfall. The trail to Tungnath is invisible under snow — navigation requires GPS and prior familiarity with the route. There are no rescue services operating. Avalanche risk on the Chandrashila ridge is real. The only people who should be here are experienced winter trekkers who have done Himalayan snow treks before and understand the consequences of a twisted ankle at 3,680m with no cell signal and no evacuation option. The upside, if you can handle all of that: absolute solitude, untouched snow fields, and the kind of Himalayan silence that does not exist the other 9 months of the year. But the risk-reward math does not work for 95% of trekkers.
