Chopta in December
Uttarakhand, India
December is full winter at Chopta. Snow depth reaches 2-4 feet at the meadow and increases with elevation. The Gopeshwar-Chopta road is intermittently closed — sometimes for days. Temperatures drop to -5 to -10°C at night, barely touching 0-3°C during the day. Tungnath is sealed, all dhabas are closed, and BSNL signal is dead. This is a committed winter trek that requires complete self-sufficiency: you carry everything in, you carry everything out. The landscape is stark and beautiful but operationally hostile.
The December story
December Chopta is for winter trekkers who want a genuine Himalayan snow experience without the extreme altitude of bigger expeditions. The trek to Tungnath through fresh powder — when conditions allow — is magical: snow-heavy deodar branches, complete silence, the occasional Himalayan monal flushing from cover in a burst of iridescent color against white. On clear days (which December provides more of than January), the summit panorama from Chandrashila is sharper than any other season — cold air eliminates all atmospheric haze. But the logistics are serious. You need a 4-season tent, a -15°C sleeping bag minimum, a stove and fuel, enough food for 3 days (in case weather traps you), and the navigation skills to follow a buried trail. The road situation means your return to Gopeshwar is never guaranteed on a specific day. December trekking at Chopta sits in a sweet spot: colder than November but more predictable than January, with established snowpack that is easier to walk on than fresh dumps. Groups of 3-5 with prior winter trekking experience will find it deeply rewarding.
