Best Time to Visit Ladakh
The 4-month window — and what happens when you miss it
Destinations in this article
Ladakh is accessible for exactly 4 months. Get the timing wrong and you're either stuck behind a snowdrift or baking on a bus in Manali waiting for roads to open.
June-July: The Classic Window (Score 5/5)
Both Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways open. Pangong Tso is that impossible blue. Nubra Valley sand dunes with double-humped camels. All guesthouses operational. Leh's Old Town bustling. This is the Ladakh of travel posters.
Downside: Manali-Leh highway gets monsoon landslides in July. Build 2 buffer days into your itinerary.
September: The Connoisseur's Pick (Score 5/5)
Post-monsoon crystal clarity. Fewer tourists than June-July. The light at altitude is extraordinary. Pangong is deepest blue. Both roads still open (usually — check Manali side). Photography conditions are unmatched.
October: Last Call (Score 3/5 and dropping)
Roads start closing. Khardung La gets early snow. Pangong accessible but cold. Nubra closing down. You might get lucky, you might get stranded. Only for experienced travelers with flexible schedules.
November-May: Sealed (Score 1/5)
Manali-Leh closed. Srinagar-Leh closed. Only access: flights to Leh (weather-dependent, frequently cancelled). Temperatures: -20 to -5°C. Chadar Trek (January-February) is the one exception — walking on a frozen river for the genuinely hardcore. Everything else is survival, not tourism.
Kids: 2/5 (Leh), 1/5 (Pangong)
The altitude is the problem. Leh sits at 3,500m. Pangong at 4,350m. Acute Mountain Sickness hits children faster than adults. The nearest proper hospital is in Leh (and it's basic). No network at Pangong. Six-hour drives on unpaved roads. This is not a family destination for young children.
