Leh in April

April is Leh waking up. Temperatures climb to -2°C to 12°C — still cold, but the sun has real warmth during the day for the first time in months. Both highways remain closed (Srinagar-Leh typically opens late May, Manali-Leh in June). You're still flight-dependent. But the town is stirring: guesthouses are cleaning rooms, restaurants are restocking, tour operators are setting up offices. The ice on the Indus is breaking. Apricot trees in the lower valleys start showing the first pink blossoms by late April. It's a beautiful, transitional moment — but it's still not tourist season.
The April story
April rewards the patient. The crowd count is effectively zero, and accommodation that costs 3,000-5,000/night in July can be had for 800-1,200. Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, and the old town are yours alone. The monasteries around Leh — Thiksey, Hemis, Shey — are accessible by road (the roads within Ladakh are mostly clear even if the highways in are closed) and have an intimate feeling without tour groups. Morning prayer ceremonies at Thiksey with just you and the monks are a different experience entirely from the July version with 200 tourists. The catch: most restaurants are still closed or operating limited menus. Permits for Pangong, Nubra, and other protected areas may not be processing yet. Acclimatize the same 2 days — altitude doesn't care what month it is. Oxygen bars in the main market area may or may not be open.
