Leh in January
Ladakh, India
Leh in January is not a travel destination — it's a survival exercise. Night temperatures plunge to -20°C or lower. The Manali and Srinagar highways are buried under metres of snow. Your only way in is Kushok Bakula Airport, and flights cancel without warning when visibility drops. The town is in hibernation mode: 90% of hotels, restaurants, and tour operators are shuttered. Main Bazaar is a ghost street. The one reason anyone comes is the Chadar Trek — walking on the frozen Zanskar River — which typically opens mid-January. That trek demands serious fitness, quality gear, and a reputable operator. If you're not here for Chadar, you have no business being here.
The January story
If you ARE here for the Chadar Trek, January Leh is unforgettable. The frozen landscape is alien — white valleys, ice-blue rivers, absolute silence broken only by wind. The Zanskar freezes thick enough to walk on for roughly 4-6 weeks starting mid-January, and the trek from Chilling to Nerak is 62 km of raw, beautiful suffering. Expect to sleep in caves, break ice for water, and see your breath freeze in real time. Back in Leh town, the few open establishments — usually Changspa-area guesthouses — charge premium rates for the privilege of heating. SNM Hospital is operational year-round, which matters because frostbite and altitude sickness don't take winters off. Jio has patchy coverage; Airtel barely works. Carry a power bank — cold kills batteries fast. Acclimatize 2 full days minimum before attempting anything physical.
