Leh in March
Ladakh, India
Skip — Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways shut Nov–May; the only access is by air, and IndiGo/Vistara cancel ~25% of winter slots for weather. Daytime highs −5°C, oxygen levels make AMS faster. Locals shut shop. Better window: June–September.
March in Leh is winter's last gasp with none of winter's rewards. The Chadar Trek season is over. Both highways remain closed. Flights operate but cancel frequently due to late-winter weather systems. Temperatures hover between -10°C at night and 5°C during the day — cold enough to be miserable but not cold enough for the dramatic frozen landscapes of January-February. The town is still largely closed, stuck in that awkward gap between winter shutdown and summer opening. There's no festival, no trek, no specific draw.
The March story
Honestly, March is Leh's least interesting month. The snow is dirty and melting in patches, the mountains look brown-grey instead of the dramatic white of deep winter or the warm gold of autumn. The few guesthouses that stay open are preparing for season, not hosting guests — you'll find construction and cleanup everywhere. That said, if you're here (probably transiting for work or research), the peace is absolute. Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa are accessible and completely empty. The old town's narrow lanes have a quiet charm when it's just you and a few locals. Tibetan New Year (Losar) sometimes falls in late February or early March and is genuinely special if you catch it — monastery ceremonies, local celebrations, no tourists. SNM Hospital operational. Keep your flight flexible — weather cancellations are common.
